Angry Birds Season 2

Angry Birds Season 2

Angry Birds Season 2

The film begins on a tropical island populated entirely by happy bird-creatures -- well, almost entirely. Our short-tempered hero, Red, has been sentenced to anger management, where he meets a speed-demon fowl named Chuck and a volatile bomb called, er... Bomb. But when a boatload of green pigs show up and drop anchor on Red's home, he and his buddies take it upon themselves to figure out what these mysterious porkers are up to.
If there's one thing The Angry Birds Movie gets absolutely right, it's pairing the characters with their voice counterpart. Red's sarcastic one-liners and short temper are a great fit for SNL alum Jason Sudeikis, and Frozen's Josh Gad churns out a high-energy performance as the motormouthed Chuck. Danny McBride is also up to the task as Bomb, along with a bevy of comedians like Maya Rudolph ("Matilda"), Keegan-Michael Key ("Judge Peckinpah"), Bill Hader ("Leonard the Pig") and Kate McKinnon ("Stella"), as well as Sean Penn as Terrance, whose only lines are a series of grunts and murmurs.
However, the story is a little sluggish, even at 95 minutes. It takes about two thirds of the movie to reach a notable turning point, when the pigs finally steal the eggs from the birds. Leading up to that, we get several amusing sequences, like the birds' first anger management session where we learn all of their backstories. The film also makes clever use of Mighty Eagle, voiced by a very game Peter Dinklage. Still, that first hour or so feels padded out and takes the Family Guy approach to bits -- that is, beating them into the ground -- only here they're mostly aimed at kids. One of the most grating examples is when the pigs start singing and dancing to Blake Shelton.

Angry Birds Season 2

Although you might fling your chickens in the same spot each time, the game's sensitive physics system usually gives different results. It's generally impossible to re-create specific trajectories and reactions, so there's some luck involved where obtaining a high score (and a full three-star rating) is concerned. There aren't really any tangible benefits to completing every mission with a three-star score, besides boasting about your score on the online leaderboards, anyway. Angry Birds has some minor issues, but most of the time, you won't notice because you'll be too busy trying to squish pigs and make full use of your chicken arsenal. The game's weapons, physics, and varied levels are really quite excellent, and they make this military-farm-complex a whole lot of fun.
